Why choose Starter Plans?

Life Cover

What is basic life cover and why might you need it?

Ever thought about how your loved ones would cope financially without you?
Basic life cover can help. It pays a lump sum if you pass away or you’re diagnosed with a terminal illness. Your family can also get an advance payment of $15,000 to help cover any immediate costs like funeral expenses.

How does it work?

  • Your loved ones can make a claim if you die or you can claim early if you’re diagnosed with a terminal illness where you’re expected to pass away in less than 12 months.
  • The lump sum paid will depend on how much cover you chose when you took out the plan – from $100,000 to $300,000. The cover amount should depend on what your loved ones might need to support themselves for those first years.
  • You should also consider updating your will so they can access the lump sum quickly through your estate. Read more about what to consider.

Whats not covered:

  • If you die from suicide or self-inflicted harm of any kind in the first 13 months of your plan purchase.
  • If you work in a hazardous occupation, like with explosives or on an oil rig, we may not be able to offer you cover.

If you’d like your loved ones to receive a life cover pay out of more than $300,000, take a look at our other options.

What is basic mortgage or rent protection and why might you need it?

When you’re fit and healthy it’s hard to imagine life changing. But what would happen if you couldn’t earn an income because you fell sick or got injured? How would you manage paying your mortgage or rent even for a short period of time? Basic mortgage or rent protection can help cover your bills while you get yourself back on your feet.

How does it work?

  • You can make a claim if you’ve been injured in an accident or you’ve been diagnosed with an illness (like cancer, endometriosis, heart conditions or mental health issues to name a few) that prevents you from working.
  • You can choose to have your payments for a maximum period of 6, 12 or 24 months depending on the plan, and $1,000 to $3,000 in monthly payments. If you’re claiming ACC too, it won’t affect what you’ll get from us.
  • Your payments will kick in after a waiting period of 4 to 8 weeks. You choose the wait period – the longer the wait period the lower your plan costs will be. When considering your wait period also think about your sick leave entitlement and any savings you may have available.
  • Your payments are designed to be used to cover your rent or mortgage while in recovery, but you do have the choice on how you use these, as we pay you, not your landlord or bank.

What is the Specialist and Diagnostic Testing benefit and why might you need it?

Getting an appointment with a medical specialist to diagnose a health issue may mean waiting on the public health system or having to pay for a private consultation and expensive medical tests. The Specialist and Diagnostic Testing add-on covers the costs of private specialist consultations and medical tests, giving you peace of mind that you can access these services when you need to without worrying about the bills.

This benefit does not cover the costs of any medical treatment you may need.

How does it work?

  • You can claim the cost of eligible specialist consultations and diagnostic tests when referred by your GP and you can claim up to $5,000 each year.
  • Eligible medical specialists (include but are not limited to): orthopaedic specialists, ear, nose and throat specialists, gynaecologists, rheumatologists - see more.
  • Eligible tests (include but are not limited to): allergy testing, colonoscopies, CT scans, MRI scans, X rays - see more.

What does it not cover:

  • Any medical treatment you may need if you’re diagnosed with a health issue.
  • The costs of routine screening where there are no symptoms, like regular mammograms, prostate checks, or cervical screenings.
  • Appointments and treatments with your GP, dentist, obstetric specialist, or psychiatrist - see full list of exclusions.
