Taking action to drive positive environmental change is one way AIA can support greater health and wellbeing, while also helping to grow a cleaner and greener Aotearoa.
As New Zealand’s largest life insurer, we’re dedicated to helping people lead healthier, longer, better lives. We know the environment has a direct impact on the health and wellbeing of our customers, our employees and our communities.
Protecting the future is something we all have a part in, and to honour the memory of our life customers who passed away in 2020, AIA NZ have partnered with Trees That Count to plant native trees for future generations to enjoy. This programme will continue for claims in 2021, and we will plant memorial trees over the course of the year.
“We had been looking for some time for the right way to honour our customers who have recently passed. Our partnership with Trees That Count was a meaningful way we could respectfully honour the memory of these customers, while also helping protect and restore native flora and fauna around New Zealand,” says Angela Busby, Chief Customer Officer AIA NZ.
“We are incredibly fortunate here in Aotearoa to be surrounded by a beautiful natural environment,” says Angela. “At AIA NZ we’re committed to sustainability in New Zealand, addressing climate change and other significant environmental issues.
“Trees can take many years to grow to maturity, which is particularly true of natives such as Tōtara and Kauri. These trees will help improve air quality, support cleaner waterways and provide shelter for native bird and insect life. We think that’s a pretty special kind of memorial, and something that will benefit generations to come.”
AIA NZ are proud to be working with Trees That Count, a conservation charity which has been championing native tree planting for over 20 years. They work with businesses, communities and everyday Kiwis with a vision to help plant 200 million native trees across our country which will restore native bush, waterways and help combat climate change.

Yes, that's fine. Please let your Claims Officer know if you do not want a memorial tree planted, and we will update our files. Your Claims Officer’s details can be found on your claim payment letter.
AIA are planting trees in bulk for claims received in 2020, and will be planting quarterly in 2021.
A team from AIA NZ, together with AIA Vitality Ambassador Ian Jones, headed to Waiheke Island in May 2021 to plant 400 very special NZ native trees in memory of our life insurance customers who passed away in 2020.
“It was a really special event and something I am very proud of,” says Sharron Botica, Chief Customer Officer AIA NZ. “Our AIA whanau braved the wind and the rain to take part; they were all fantastic and carried out some incredible mahi in a wetland area near Onetangi. We’re very grateful to our partners that helped make the day possible – Trees That Count and Waiheke Resources Trust ‘Love Our Wetlands’. It was a humbling experience, and one the AIA team will remember.”
Planting for AIA NZ customers who passed away in 2020 will continue throughout the year in a number of other locations throughout New Zealand.
