New, affordable protection designed to strengthen employee financial resilience
AIA New Zealand today announced the launch of Severe Trauma into its Corporate Solutions portfolio, marking another step in AIA’s ongoing commitment to innovation, affordability and to strengthening the financial wellbeing of New Zealanders.
The new offering responds directly to adviser and employer demand for more affordable trauma cover and introduces a new-to-market proposition not currently offered by any other provider in New Zealand’s group insurance market.
Severe Trauma provides focused cover for serious medical conditions that have a significant and long-term impact on an employee’s life, at a materially lower cost than traditional comprehensive trauma cover. Premiums are typically around half the price of Critical Illness cover, making it a compelling option for employers looking to balance meaningful protection with affordability.
“As the market has evolved, so have the needs of employers and employees,” says Ben Lovelock, AIA NZ Chief Product and Marketing Officer.
“This is an important milestone for AIA and for the Corporate Solutions market. Severe Trauma is the first new product we’ve launched in this space since 2014 and it reflects our commitment to innovation, affordability and strengthening the financial wellbeing of New Zealanders at work.”
Expanding choice for employers and employees
While comprehensive trauma cover remains an important part of employee benefit programmes, it is often perceived as cost prohibitive, particularly for larger or more diverse workforces. Severe Trauma has been designed to address that challenge.
The benefit covers fewer medical conditions than the traditional more comprehensive Critical Illness cover but focuses on high-severity, life‑changing diagnoses such as cancer, heart attack and stroke. For conditions covered by both products, the severity thresholds for Severe Trauma are the same or higher, enabling significantly lower premiums while maintaining meaningful protection.
“Employers tell us they want options,” says Ben. “Severe Trauma gives them a new way to offer protection that is affordable, relevant and valued by employees, especially in today’s economic environment.”
Severe Trauma can be taken by itself or alongside AIA’s other Corporate Solutions products, including Critical Illness cover, giving employers the flexibility to design layered solutions that meet the needs of different employee segments.
Supporting retention and access to cover
Severe Trauma also provides an alternative for employers who may otherwise consider reducing or removing trauma cover altogether due to rising costs.
“Affordability pressures are real,” says Ben. “When budgets tighten, insurance is often at risk. Severe Trauma helps employers retain an important form of protection for their people, rather than losing it entirely.”
As part of the launch, AIA NZ has also updated its Critical Illness definitions within Corporate Solutions, aligning them more closely with its retail offering and strengthening competitiveness.
Adviser-driven innovation
The idea for Severe Trauma originated directly from adviser feedback, with strong demand for a more price competitive trauma option that still delivers clear value.
“Advisers play a critical role in shaping the future of this market,” says Ben. “They told us there was a gap and we listened. Severe Trauma opens up new conversations with employers and supports advisers to grow Corporate Solutions in a more sustainable way.”
“We are designing products with purpose and relevance at their core,” says Ben. “This is about more than incremental change. It is about lifting the category and ensuring insurance remains accessible and meaningful for more New Zealanders.”
“Our ambition is to play a leadership role in New Zealand’s life and health ecosystem, not just as a provider of insurance, but as a partner to employers, advisers and communities.”
Severe Trauma for Corporate Solutions is available from 5 May 2026.
