Ok New Zealand, it’s time to assume control.
It’s been a big week for WellBeings, as we launched episode 1 interviewing ex Navy Seal and founder of wellness programme Made For, Pat Dossett.
We know there’s a lot we’re all dealing with right now, whether its job loss, divorce, disease, vax anxiety or just feeling overwhelmed. The hope with the WellBeings community, is that we can offer support and help people take control back.
The challenge is where to start? It’s all about the smallest of steps, what is that one thing that will give you back some control and help you feel better? It might be getting out into nature, spending time away from your phone or just stopping for a minute to notice your breath. The most important thing is having the knowledge to be aware of these simple things, noticing what works for you, and then using them to bring you back into flow, which is why we have created this series to educate ourselves on the simple tools, shifts and rituals that we all have the ability to put into use.
Now let’s take a look at some of our top take homes from WellBeings Episode1 with Pat Dossett.
I guess its really easy to beat yourself up for not exercising, drinking enough water or spending too much time on a screen. “Even if you have the best of intentions, there are always going to be hiccups or things you can’t control,” says Dossett. So focus on the things you can control and accept what has been and what you can’t change. When is the best time to plant a tree? 10 years ago, when is the second best time? Today.
We all have a tendency to over-commit when we are trying to achieve a personal goal. Getting a six pack in a month before summer, doing an iron man without being much of a runner, you are putting yourself in a place where it’s hard not to fail. “Those big goals are by definition outside the normal rhythms of our life” says Dossett. “Because of that, when you misstep it’s easy to say something like ‘next year,’ instead of continuing on the journey.” It’s all about small steps, forming habits and seeing the gradual results that can lead to real, permanent changes in your life, mindset and peace of mind.
We can all relate to what people are going through right now, because we are all going through it together. That little bit of support we give to each other, to our loved ones, to our work colleagues and to people we meet on the street (when we are allowed back outside), it really matters. When it comes to your personal goals as well, research shows when you share them with a friend, you are a lot more likely to succeed. “We want to find like-minded people that can help reinforce what you want to do and support you in getting there, you’ll go much further with others than you will alone,” says Dossett. So find your tribe and get to it.
So many incredible take homes from Pat. Our big thank you goes to AIA Vitality’s incredible support it really wouldn’t of been possible without them. Stepping away from TV I felt rudderless, without a strong purpose. I realised I’d put a lot of my physical and mental health on the side, I was driven and ambitious to get ahead in both NZ and America but it was all external. I decided to put the focus on the internal, do a little “ME-search". Yes change does require effort but it doesn’t have to be hard. Little by little we can ALL acquire the skills to do BIG things, no matter what our age and most importantly make lasting and meaningful change in our lives.
