Health & Wellbeing

We paid 92% of the claims we received in 2023, totalling $734.8m between 1 January and 31 December 2023**.

Our 2023 Adviser Wellbeing Report found the overall wellbeing of Kiwi financial advisers has improved since 2021, however continued support is needed to enable advisers to thrive***.

To create healthier communities, we require our workplaces, operations and value chain to embody an element of intrinsic sustainability.

Sustainable Operations

In 2023 we started transitioning our fleet to hybrid vehicles to reduce fuel usage.

Through our Building Optimisation Project and the move out of AIA House into our temporary premises, we ensured we minimised waste going to landfill.

In line with our commitment to a sustainable future, our investment approach is focused on achieving our climate goals while maintaining strong financial performance.

Sustainable Investment

AIA NZ invested into the Betashares Global Sustainability Leaders fund and seeded the NZD hedged version of the same fund.

AIA NZ prompted the establishment of the NZ Financial Services Council Sustainability Investment Benchmarks Focus Group.

Our Net-Zero 2050 Commitment and Science Based Targets

The health of the planet is inextricably linked to the health of our communities. Sustaining Healthier, Longer, Better Lives requires us to take action to address climate change, the impact of which continues to be deeply felt in our communities and globally.

In December 2021, AIA Group committed to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050. AIA Group has also signed up to the Science Based Targets initiatives (SBTi) to set ambitious emission reduction targets in line with the latest climate science deemed necessary to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement.

AIA NZ’s Toitū carbonreduce certification

AIA NZ proudly achieved Toitū carbonreduce certification in 2022 and has been recertified annually since. We’re actively reducing our scope 1 and 2 emissions and changing the way we operate to help grow a cleaner, healthier Aotearoa New Zealand.

AIA NZ has been on its carbon and waste reduction journey for over a decade, and in 2019 we began measuring and reporting our greenhouse gas emissions as part of AIA Group.

To make sure we are following best practice, we partnered with Toitū Envirocare in 2021 to improve the efficiency, accuracy and integrity of our emissions management and reporting process. Toitū Envirocare helped us set targets grounded in science aimed at limiting the increase in global average temperature to below 1.5˚C above pre-industrial levels.

AIA NZ achieved Toitū carbonreduce certification for measuring, reducing, and reporting our operational carbon emissions. This means we have accurately measured our greenhouse gas emissions and put in place strategies to manage and reduce impacts.

Small steps to a cleaner, healthier Aotearoa New Zealand

Toitū carbonreduce certification isn’t a one-time achievement. Each year we are audited to retain our certification and show that we’re continuing to reduce our emissions.

In March 2024 we were recertified for our work during 2023. The results showed that in 2023 our operational carbon emissions were 1,536tCO2e (tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent). This is primarily derived from the resources and materials that we consume.

In 2023, AIA NZ's emissions increased compared with the previous year. The leading sources of our emissions and some of the ways in which we are reducing them are:

Scope 1 emissions from fleet fuel consumption – we have started converting our fleet to hybrid vehicles, with the last of our lease fleet expected to convert to hybrid by the end of 2025.
Scope 2 emissions from energy use – approximately half of our 2023 energy emissions were from the use of natural gas for heating at our main office. During 2024, the gas boilers will be removed as part of the refurbishment of these premises by the landlord.
Scope 3 emissions – the main sources of our other emissions in 2023 were airline travel and employee commuting. 2021 and 2022 emissions were impacted by COVID restrictions. Business operations returning to “normal” have resulted in more onsite working and travel for in person meetings, resulting in an increase compared to last year. However, it is important to note that air travel emissions are approximately 40% lower than those measured in 2019 as seen in reporting as part of AIA Group.

To meet our long-term commitment of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, we are planning for further development of our transition strategy over the coming year for Scope 3 emissions including financed emissions that we will start measuring in 2024.
